Reporting and Writing

Almost every one of our yearbook spreads includes a story. I have experience writing about a variety of school events including sports stories, spiritual features, divider paragraphs, and even student life features. I also write a segment each week for our school newsletter about various athletic events throughout the week. In these segments, I will detail game results from the week as well as feature various stat lines from our athletes.

Sports Writing

This year multiple different school records were set on the high school tack team. The most unusual one, though, was the banana relay.
“The banana relay was awesome,” said junior Allen Reimer. “We got to add a fun thing to end the track meet.”
The race was like a typical 4x100 except that instead of a baton, team members passed on a banana to the next person. To finish the race, the last runner had to eat the banana.
“It was pretty hard [to eat]. I was like breathing really hard because I just sprinted really fast and the banana was kind of mushy because Michael probably handed it off really hard” said freshman Zach McCaffrey.
Since there were only two girls on the high school team, juniors Cheyenne Crow and Kathryn Seward got to pick their respective teams. The winning team consisted of senior Michael Malone, freshman Sam O’Neal, junior Cheyenne Crow, and freshman Zach McCaffrey.

Feature Writing

As the end of the second semester approached, upperclassmen students were able to relax and take a breath at the annual junior-senior banquet which was held this year at Scenic Valley Inn. Just like every year, the night was meant to honor the upcoming graduating class.
“[To honor them] we gave them gifts and we tried to make decisions based off of what they would prefer more, like food choices,” said junior Kendall Vandorn.
Beginning fundraising last summer, the junior class planned the entire event from the venue, to the catering, to the decorations.
“We held basketball camps during the summer, a parent’s night out event in the winter, sold Valentine's cookies in the spring, worked concessions at K-State games, and sold concessions daily during break,” said junior Kate Koller.
The event began at five o’clock, starting with a walk-up and pictures. Following that, students were invited inside to enjoy a dinner catered by Olive Garden. While they ate, they could fill out a poll about the junior and senior class, asking who was most likely to do something.
After dinner, the juniors and seniors exchanged gifts. Some students decided to go above and beyond with their presents.
“We just ended up getting Gage a 2x4,” said senior Nathan Dunaway. “[His reaction] was great I mean I liked the reaction to the poker set but just when Noah walked in with a 2x4.”
The night was filled with laughter and memories as the juniors honored the seniors for one last time before graduation.
