Editing, Leadership, and Team Building

When I was taking yearbook class my sophomore year, our advisor left midway through the second semester. Left with a book that was not even halfway finished, the new advisor and I took on the task of finishing a yearbook in under six weeks. Our book was finished by the June deadline. During the 23-24 school year, as we approached our final weeks of school, we took on the task of editing all 110 pages. I took spreads that had relatively no content and transformed them into pages that were eventually published. My job as an editor has shifted more and more hands-on as I have gotten older, helping teach younger students how to design pages and edit themselves more effectively. This past September, I was head of a group of students who took part in the State Fair Journalism Competition. Our five-person staff produced a four-page newspaper about the fair in under twelve hours and took home first place overall in the competition as well as first place in the design that I created as well as first place in headlines.

Commitment to Diversity

One of the unique things about our school is that it is preschool through twelve. We have a variety of students ranging from ages four to eighteen. Our yearbook staff can cover an intense high school basketball game mere hours away from covering a kindergarten birthday party. I cover events in our yearbook ranging from sports, to spiritual, to student life. Another thing that sets our publication apart is that we can focus on our school’s Christian values in and throughout our publication.

Web and Social Media

During my sophomore and junior years, I put together social media graphics daily for our school’s facebook and instagram pages. These graphics were also included in our school’s weekly newsletter that is sent out to families. I would also write up captions for each of our features. I did this for both our school’s main pages as well as our athletics pages.

This graphic celebrated eighth grader Deborah Burch winning the county spelling bee.
This graphic highlighted upcoming days off of school.
This graphic was meant to advertise our school in light of our upcoming open house.
